AccessionGenProp0744
Nameglyoxalase pathway, glutathione dependent
TypePATHWAY
DescriptionGlyoxalase I and glyoxalase II are the enzymes lactoylglutathione lyase (EC 4.4.1.5) and hydroxyacylglutathione hydrolase (EC 3.1.2.6), respectively. This system detoxifies methylglyoxal and other highly reactive aldehydes. Glutathione serves a cofactor; variants of this pathway may occur where glutathione is replaced by another cofactor such as trypanothione in Trypanosoma cruzi (see PMID:16958620).
