Name | decarboxylation/antiport proton-motive cycle: glutamate-GABA |
Type | SYSTEM |
Description | The decarboxylation of glutamate to 4-aminobutanoate, also known as gamma-aminobutyrate or GABA, coupled with glutamate-GABA antiport, provides a robust mechanism of glutamate-based acid resistance for Escherichia coli and other organisms that need to survive transient exposures to highly acidic pH. Import of the negatively charged glutamate, decarboxylation with the consumption of a proton, and export of the neutral molecule GABA serves to reduce cytosolic acidity. Similar cycles are driven by the decarboxylation of other amino acids. |
