CommentThis family consists of the periplasmic serine protease DegS (HhoB), a shorter paralog of protease DO (HtrA, DegP) and DegQ (HhoA). It is found in E. coli and several other Proteobacteria of the gamma subdivision. It contains a trypsin domain and a single copy of PDZ domain (in contrast to DegP with two copies). A critical role of this DegS is to sense stress in the periplasm and partially degrade an inhibitor of sigma(E).
