CommentThis enzyme catalyzes the breakdown of allantoate [1], first to ureidoglycine by hydrolysis and then decarboxylation of one of the two equivalent ureido groups. Ureidoglycine then spontaneously exchanges ammonia for water resulting in ureidoglycolate. This enzyme is an alternative to allantoicase (3.5.3.4) which releases urea.
