Research Interests and Accomplishments
Tanja Davidsen is currently the manager of the Annotation Engineering team at the J. Craig Venter Institute. This team handles a variety of tasks and software packages including the JCVI annotation pipelines for prokaryotic, eukaryotic, viral and metagenomic data, the Comprehensive Microbial Resource (CMR), The NIAID sponsored BRC Pathema, and support for all manual annotation and comparative genomics tools.
Tanja began working at JCVI's predecessor organization TIGR in 2000 as the engineer in charge of the Comprehensive Microbial Resource. The CMR currently has over 20,000 unique visitors each month and offers many tools and analysis on complete prokaryotic genomes. After JCVI was awarded the NIAID BRC contract Tanja began working as the lead engineer on the Pathema site, a comparative genomic site with a focus on the NIAID category A & B organisms Clostridium, Bacillus, Entamoeba and Burkholderia. Since 2007 Tanja has expanded her group and now leads the entire Annotation Engineering team which centralizes all annotation-related activities, include comparative genomics and web display, into one group which services the annotation needs of the entire institute.
Tanja earned her BS from The College of William and Mary in Biology and Computer Science, and her PhD from the Medical College of Virginia focusing on antibiotic resistance mechanisms in Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
