Educators Mini-Workshop: DNA Barcoding
The J. Craig Venter Institute’s Mini-Workshop is designed to train middle school and high school faculty on specific techniques and topics used in the field of genomics Topics covered in this course include:
- Plant DNA isolation
- Polymerase chain reaction
- Agarose gel electrophoresis
- Sanger Sequencing
- DNA Informatics Analysis
Dates for the Courses and Locations
- TDB 2010
- Rockville, Maryland
Course Details
Genomics is a rapidly developing and yet widely misunderstood field that is creating changes in medicine, business, and agriculture on a scale analogous to the industrial revolution. This Mini-Workshop will present a series of laboratories to explore the use of genomics in species identification. Teachers will have the opportunity to work with cutting edge technology and be able to help their students:
- Understand the cellular process of reading and following genetic instructions
- Understand molecular biology techniques of genomic work
- Develop an appreciation of genomics’ complexity and impact on society
