GLOBAL OCEAN SAMPLING: PROJECT MICROPLASTICS
HELP US REACH OUR GOAL OF $265K
With your support JCVI’s Global Ocean Sampling team is launching a 2017 expedition to study the impact of microplastics in the ocean. As our partner, you will enable us to collect waste-site samples in the Atlantic Ocean, and perform the lab work and analysis needed to better understand and help mitigate this danger to our oceans.
Ultimately this research will aid in the design of new plastics that decompose more quickly and safely in the marine environment. Understanding these microbial communities is a critical first step. Please contribute today in the spirit of #GivingTuesday 2016 to support JCVI’s Global Ocean Sampling Expedition and help us meet our goal to raise $265,000 to help conserve our marine ecosystems.
The expedition will focus on the eastern seaboard of the United States, from Florida to Massachusetts, but the research is broadly applicable as plastic pollution in our waters is a worldwide problem. As plastics degrade they break down into tiny particles, and chemicals are leached into the water resulting in significant environmental damage. Unseen microbial communities are the backbone of our oceans, and changes in their makeup may have catastrophic effects on the entire ocean food chain.
