Maria del Pilar Martinez Viedma is a staff scientist with a strong background in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Virology and Immunology. She has experience working in diverse settings where she applied her knowledge and acquired cutting edge techniques that are reflected in her strong publication record.

Dr. Martinez Viedma gained a great part of her technical skills and knowledge in Microbiology and Bacteriology during her PhD training at the University of Jaen (Spain) where Dr. Antonio Gálvez mentored her.  Her thesis was focused on food safety with the study of bacteriocines as a natural preservative against food pathogens such as B. cereusS. aureusL. monocytogenes among other pathogenic bacteria. Her undergraduate studies were funded by a Fellowship from the University of Jaen in Spain. She also obtained the European Doctorate Mention as a result of an exchange stay in the laboratory of Dr. Danilo Ercolini (University of Naples Federico II, Italy).

As a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Infectious Diseases Department at the Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Dr. Martinez Viedma continued expanding her knowledge in Molecular Biology, Virology and Immunology. She investigated the molecular mechanisms by which SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) cause AIDS in non-naturally infected non-human primates and compared the outcome of this infection to naturally SIV-infected non-human primates, where SIV infection does not lead to AIDS. Particularly, she studied gene expression and cellular pathways activated in macrophages from these two different models.

Throughout her experience and training, Dr. Martinez Viedma has gained a unique perspective in approaching a broad range of projects, people and environments.

Research Priorities

  • To identify immunodominant epitopes for multiple Flavivirus species.
  • To design, develop, and implement a seroimmune diagnostic method for ZIKV detection, based on the detection of specific epitopes from the virus.
  • To determine ZIKV seroprevalence in serum samples collected from outbreak regions.
