Accessibility Statement
The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) wants everyone to be able to use jcvi.org, including people who use a screen reader, screen magnifier, voice control or only a keyboard.
Our standard
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, the international standard for making web content usable by people with disabilities.
What we have done
In 2026 we reviewed the site against WCAG 2.2 AA and made changes, including:
- text alternatives for images, and names for links and buttons shown only as icons;
- keyboard access to slideshows, tabs, menus and other interactive features, with a visible focus indicator;
- text and link colors with enough contrast;
- headings and page regions that follow the structure of each page;
- checks that point out accessibility problems to our editors as they publish.
We test the site with automated checks and keyboard testing, and check new content as it is added.
Known limitations
Some parts of the site may not yet be fully accessible:
- Content from other services, which we don't control: the donation form (Qgiv), maps (Google Maps), embedded videos (YouTube), our Instagram feed and other embedded tools. We set these up to be as accessible as we can, but how well they work depends on their providers.
- Older content, such as archived news, documents (PDFs) and images, some of which may be missing text alternatives.
Feedback and help
