Nitrifying Archaea and Bacteria
Ammonia and nitrite oxidizing prokaryotes conduct nitrification in a variety of environmental and engineered systems. We are studying the genomes and ecophysiology of these organisms in a variety of marine and freshwater ecosystems. One of the major focuses of this project is to establish a fundamental understanding of the relationship between gene, transcript, protein, and function through purely informatics studies, well controlled culture experiments, and field sampling.
This collaborative work is funded through the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute, while leveraging the Global Ocean Sampling expedition data.
