Chronic Wound Microbiome

The goal of this collaborative study is to define the microbiome of major classes of human chronic wounds through metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. A suite of bioinformatics and computational analyses will be carried out to characterize the wound metagenome including taxonomic classification, functional annotation, genotype profiling, pathogenicity characterization, and co-occurring network analysis. Metatranscriptomic analyses will be carried out to profile the functional activities of the wound residents and the metabolic pathways. Associations of the wound microbial ecosystem with wound etiology and treatment outcome will also be examined.
